135This meta-analysis of 32 studies found that Transcendental Meditation (TM) practice cultures a calmer style of physiological functioning outside of meditation, as indicated by lower levels of heart rate, spontaneous skin resistance responses, plasma lactate, and respiratory rate. (Reference 1) Living a more relaxed life is good for the heart and reduces aging, as well as reducing the risk for all types of disease. Reduced cortisol. TM practice reduces the level of the major stress hormone cortisol in the morning for a more relaxed start of the day. (Reference 2)Reduced teacher burnout. A randomized controlled study of secondary school teachers in Vermont, USA, found that TM signifi cantly reduced depression, perceived stress, and overall teacher burnout. (Reference 3)Decreased mood disturbance in family caregivers. Two months of regular practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique reduced caregivers%u2019 anxiety by 31%, depression by 31%, anger by 36%, confusion by 19%, and fatigue by 29% as compared to controls.
