The TM group received Treatment As Usual (TAU), plus TM. The control group received only TAU and included patients doing TM irregularly. The practice of TM twice a day was found to be highly effective for reducing alcohol use. Followup after discharge at 30 days and 90 days found that drinking was markedly reduced in those who usually practiced TM twice a day and that none of the people who practiced TM twice a day returned to heavy drinking.Maladaptive responses to stress are thought to play a role in addiction and relapse. Relationships between frequency of TM and 3-month outcomes (frequency of alcohol use, heavy drinking, stress, psychological distress, and craving) were examined using Pearson correlations, with confi rmation of signifi cant relationships via linear regression, controlling for the baseline value of each outcome.Integrating TM into inpatient AUD treatment was feasible. Adoption of TM was high (85% practicing TM on most of the past 30 days at followup; 61% closely adhering to recommended practice of twice-daily TM). Participants reported high satisfaction with TM. This study established the feasibility and acceptability of using TM during AUD treatment. Regularly practicing TM (but not just learning it) was consistently associated with better outcomes.
