212I don%u2019t get what those three tests in that last chart are saying. They show that people practicing the TM technique are better at seeing things clearly, and less likely to be distracted or confused by complications from the environment. So what does this really show? While perception becomes increasingly refined, inner stability and discrimination are also improved. Psychologists call this %u201cfield independence%u201d; that is, the subject acts from their own information and inner awareness, and thus they can successfully disregard irrelevant or distracting information from their environment, or %u201cfield.%u201dOther research has established that people who are field-independent are active, independent, not submissive, and less anxious. They have fewer spontaneous galvanic skin responses, more self-esteem, and more favorable beliefs about human nature.Psychologists call such people %u201cself-actualized.%u201d This means that their own inner nature, or inner potential, is actualized, made real. TMers grow in selfactualization.
