During the COVID-19 pandemic, thirty-two emergency clinicians (physicians, nurses, and physician-assistants) from two urban hospitals were recruited to participate in Transcendental Meditation (TM) program for 3 months. Participants demonstrated signifi cant reductions in burnout and in symptoms of emotional exhaustion %u2014 decreased depression, anxiety, stress, and sleep disturbance. 93% said TM was helpful during COVID and that they would recommend TM to a friend. This study replicates previous research indicating that TM practice increases resilience. The way TM increases resilience is that, during TM, stress, as measured by physiological stress markers, is reduced. Further, regular TM develops a calmer style of physiological functioning during activity. It reduces anxiety, accelerates recovery from stress, increases brainwave coherence, and increases creativity, fl uid intelligence, and practical intelligence. All these changes contribute to increasing one%u2019s resilience. This study found that TM training was feasible for emergency clinicians during the COVID-19 pandemic and that it led to signifi cant increases in resilience and reductions in burnout and psychological symptoms. TM is a safe and effective meditation tool to provide prolonged improvements in resilience and decreased burnout for clinicians.Reference: Azizoddin, D.
