269Decreased Crime in the Environment of Increasing Crime This study found that in 1975, when 1% or more of a city population learned the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique, crime rate decreased in those cities. (Reference 1) Moreover, the trend of crime over the following six years decreased in the TM cities compared to matched control cities. (Reference 2)This was named the Maharishi Effect in honor of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who predicted it and provided the technology for its implementation. When Maharishi learned of these study results, he proclaimed, %u201cThrough the window of science we see the dawn of the age of enlightenment.%u201d1.
