95BETTER EQUIPPED FOR A GOOD LIFE100806040200PhysicalHealthCognitiveHealthEmotionalHealthSchoolPerformancePercentAgree Disagreep < .01 p < .01 p < .01 p < .01Improved Health and School Performancetm-009In Huay-Huay, a remote Peruvian town in the Andean mountains, in a school where all the children had learned TM, 91 randomly-selected children, ranging in age from 11 to 16 years, were given a questionnaire about their experiences with TM in four categories: physical health (more energy, better quality of sleep, good athletic ability), cognitive health (better memory, comprehension, problem-solving ability), emotional health (less aggression, friendlier, happier), and school performance (satisfaction and effi ciency at school, getting along with classmates, academic achievement and learning, less truancy).A majority of these children reported benefi ts across all measures, and these benefi ts were apparently stronger when students practiced meditation more regularly. Gender and grade level did not appear to infl uence this outcome. (Reference 1)A second study used the same measure with 520 primary and secondary students at four schools in Lima, Cusco, Puno, and Ventanilla, and found similar results. (Reference 2)In Peru, as of 2023, more than 60,000 young people, including indigenous students in remote locations, practice TM twice daily in school. Most of these are Catholic schools, in this predominantly Catholic country.
