255Growth toward Cosmic Consciousness, the fi rst stable state of enlightenment, has been found to be associated with a high level of brain integration. Randomized controlled trials, the most rigorous type of research, found that regular practice of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique increases brain integration. In this study of people not practicing TM, top-level managers and world-class athletes scored higher on the Brain Integration Scale (BIS) than less successful peers. The BIS measures coherent functioning in the frontal executive areas of the brain, which coordinate holistic thought and behavior that will be successful in any situation. High BIS scores also indicate restfully alert and effi cient brain function. Subjects also scored higher on moral reasoning and self-development, and recovered more quickly from stress. Even though they had not learned TM, they had more frequent experiences associated with Transcendental Consciousness during waking activity, resting, and sleep; these experiences are classical subjective indicators of Cosmic Consciousness. Other research showed that police with higher brain integration were more spiritual and were better than other police in throwing off the stress of police work before entering back into their family life. World class musicians, compared to less-skilled musicians, had greater cognitive fl exibility, faster brain processing, higher levels of moral reasoning, and more frequent transcendental experiences. However, both levels of musicians had high measures of brain integration, supporting other research which showed that learning to play a musical instrument is good for your brain. Research has also found that higher BIS scores are correlated with standard measures of originality, fl exibility, and fl uency of creative thought. TM practice increases this coherence and research confi rms that this coherence is found in more successful people.
